Topic 1 has set me off on a meaningful journey of gaining insight and knowledge of the terms “Digital Visitor” and “Digital Resident”.
Through the readings of my friends’ blog posts and the various articles, I realised on the differing opinions and expressions we have about these 2 terms.
Personally, when the term “Digital resident” comes up, I will have the opinion of its cons. How it may affect face-to-face interactions and how cyber bullying or criticising a stranger is so easily achievable.
However, my friends have relatively different thoughts from me.
For example, Zoey mentioned that she is a Digital resident and the ease of social media has granted her the chance of expressing and sharing moments of her life. Delighted at the idea of being able to share her happiness and experiences easily on the social platform has caused her to be a resident. Besides, technology has also helped to broaden her networks.
On the other hand, Wendy is a Digital visitor or a resident depending on the situation. As a student, she will be a Digital visitor when it comes to projects. However, similarly to Zoey, she is a Digital resident if it is related to her personal life. Thrilled at the thought of being able to share moments instantly on social platform has lead to her being a resident.
All these readings has allowed me to be exposed to the differing opinions and triggered thoughts that I may not come up with.
To conclude, being a Digital visitors and residents have their own pros and cons, but only the individual will know what they are at heart – be it a lover of social media or a favourite of “living in the moment”.
